🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 ISLE OF SKYE TOURIST BOARD — VISITOR LEVY UPDATE

We’re delighted to hear that proposals for a Highland Visitor Levy are progressing. Visitors already contribute millions to the local economy through hotels, B&Bs, restaurants, cafés, shops, fuel and attractions. But after careful consideration, it has been established that some of you still have money left. Clearly, this needs addressed. Under the proposals, overnight visitors will pay an additional charge on their accommodation, with the money being used to improve local infrastructure and the overall visitor experience. Potential improvements currently under consideration include: • A second passing place on Skye • One pothole being selected for repair • A sign in Portree confirming that yes, the Co-op car park really is like this • Additional viewing areas where visitors can safely photograph sheep they have already passed 600 of • Moving the Old Man of Storr slightly closer to the car park Unfortunately, due to budget constraints, widening the A87 to allow overtaking a rented motorhome doing 31mph has been ruled out. The Council has described this as “technically impossible and spiritually contrary to the Skye experience.” Day visitors will not pay the levy. We would therefore politely ask everyone not to arrive at 8am, see the Fairy Pools, Storr and Portree, then leave at 11:45pm claiming they were “just passing through.” The midges have also confirmed they will continue operating their own collection scheme. Cash is not accepted. - Isle of Skye Tourist Board "Thank you for supporting the Highlands. We knew there was another fiver in you."
