Prevention, containment and the preservation of morale.

“Remain calm. They can sense administrative weakness.”

Know the Midge

The Highland midge is small, numerous and entirely unimpressed by your itinerary. Sensible preparation usually keeps matters manageable and your holiday photographs comparatively calm.

When to expect them

Activity varies with season and weather. Warm, overcast and windless conditions are favoured. Bright sun and a decent breeze generally reduce attendance without requiring formal notice.

Where they gather

Sheltered woodland, damp ground and still water are common gathering places. Open and breezy locations are usually easier, though the view may arrive horizontally.

How to prepare

Carry an effective repellent, cover arms and legs, and use a head net when conditions are severe. Apply protection before leaving the vehicle, not after becoming the evening’s principal attraction.

If bitten

Wash the area, avoid scratching and use your usual bite treatment if needed. Seek medical advice for severe swelling or allergic symptoms. Complaining loudly provides emotional relief but little clinical benefit.

Before setting off

Useful Checklist

  • Pack repellent
  • Cover exposed skin
  • Carry a head net
  • Choose breezy stops
  • Close windows at dusk
  • Maintain morale
“They are irritating rather than sinister. Unfortunately, they have interpreted this distinction very generously.”
