🎸 ISLE OF SKYE TOURIST BOARD — MAJOR EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT
OASIS — LIVE IN PORTREE The Isle of Skye Tourist Board is delighted to confirm that plans are progressing for Oasis to perform a special open-air concert in Portree next summer. Venue: The Lump. Yes. That Lump. The proposal forms part of a new programme to bring major live music events to the Highlands. Initial discussions began when an events consultant visited Portree, looked up at The Lump and said: “You could get a stage up there.” Nobody asked the obvious follow-up question quickly enough. Things have moved on considerably since. Early estimates suggest a capacity of up to 30,000 people. Nobody is entirely sure where. The original computer model included part of Portree Harbour, Home Farm and Achachork so revised calculations are under way. 🚗 PARKING A comprehensive transport plan is being prepared. Current options include Bayfield car park, the Coop car park, several crofts in the vicinity, Broadford and one particularly optimistic passing place near Staffin. Campervans will have their own dedicated parking area. Kyle. 🚌 TRANSPORT Additional buses will operate after the concert. Organisers have ordered 42. The A87 has asked for this in writing. 🚻 TOILETS Temporary toilet provision is considered a priority. Eighteen portable toilets are proposed. Event planners believe this should be sufficient provided nobody drinks anything after 3pm. 🌧️ WEATHER The concert will still proceed in rain, wind, mist or sideways rain. Sunshine has deliberately not been included in the planning assumptions. Umbrellas will be discouraged. Not for security reasons. We just don’t want to spend the whole of Monday collecting them from Raasay. 🎤 SUPPORT The Portree Pipe Band has offered to open proceedings. Donnie MacLeod has also offered two songs on the accordion. Oasis have not yet been informed of the second offer. We feel timing is important. 📱 MOBILE COVERAGE Signal may be limited. This means approximately 30,000 people could be forced to attend a concert without livestreaming it. Organisers acknowledge this may be the most ambitious part of the project. 🏠 LOCAL RESIDENTS Nearby residents will receive advance notice, two complimentary earplugs and a leaflet explaining the economic benefits of hearing Wonderwall from their bedroom. The concert is expected to finish shortly before 30,000 people simultaneously ask: “Where did we park?” Traffic management staff are working on it. Current advice: “Head towards Broadford.” OASIS — LIVE AT THE LUMP Portree. One night only. Weather permitting. Gallaghers permitting. Portree permitting. Parking, well that’s another story. 😐🎸🏔️
