OLD MAN OF STORR GONDOLA — PROJECT UPDATE Plans are being developed for a gondola from the Storr car park to a new viewing platform near the Old Man. The aim is to improve access and ease pressure on the path. Our visitor survey found broad support, particularly among people who had just asked a walker coming down, “How much further is it? Honestly.” The journey is expected to take eight minutes. Cabins will carry six passengers and offer views across Trotternish. The views will still be there on days when you cannot see them. Passengers arriving at the top may say they’ve been up the Storr. Anyone wishing to say they climbed it will be invited to walk back down and have another go. An Alpine gondola specialist asked Donnie for the average wind speed. Donnie said the measuring equipment was last seen heading towards Raasay, and he’d forward the results if it came back. Murdo is currently working on ticket prices. He proposed charging extra for a window seat. When it was pointed out that every seat is beside a window, he proposed charging extra for a window with a view. We have explained the difficulty of knowing which one that will be. The walking path will remain open. The question of parking remains less settled. Donnie suggested collecting passengers from Broadford, which the engineers say would add considerable cost. Donnie says it would still be easier than finding a parking space at the Storr. A parking survey was commissioned. The surveyors have driven past three times and hope to begin shortly. - ISLE OF SKYE TOURIST BOARD “The Storr gondola: finally, an uplift on Skye that isn’t provided by the wind.”
